To be clear, you can always use widgets from the installed apps on the iPhone. But they might feel limited in terms of customization to show information. Here is where the widget apps come to light with tons of options to create a widget that packs all the relevant information and match the home screen wallpaper and app icons. Since the iOS 14 update last week, I have tried a few widget apps to create custom widgets on my iPhone XR. Each app has its pros and cons. Among them, we have finalized the five best iPhone apps to create personalized widgets. Let’s get started.
1. Widgetsmith
Widgetsmith comfortably tops the list with a plethora of customization options such as font type, size, background color, and more. It starts with a wide collection of highly customizable widgets. From dates to weather, from reminders to astronomy. It lets you play with a lot of options. Each can be adjusted precisely to fit your desired function and appearance best. You can add information to a widget using eight categories from the list below.

You can schedule this set of widgets to appear dynamically on your home screen and follow the rules you define. For example, a particular widget could show the weather first thing in the morning, then your calendar during your workday, then switch to your Activity ring progress as you wrap up your day. Simply select ‘Add a Timed Widget’ and define a time slot for a widget to appear at a set time. That lets you take full advantage of each slot on your home screen. My favorite feature is Apple Health integration. You can add the Apple Health activity and customize it with other information using the Widgetsmith widgets. 2. Color Widgets
As the name suggests, Color Widget is all about beautiful colors and gradient effects on the widget. As for customization, you can change the background color, theme, font, and even set a photo to a widget. I like a small detail where the app adds a remaining battery percentage at the widget’s upper left corner. What Color Widgets lacks is third-party integration such as Apple Health, Reminders, and Photos app. You can’t add information from these apps to a widget. Most widgets are completely free to use. You will be mostly fine using them on the iPhone home screen. Some of the widgets do come with a Premium tag that costs $4 as a one-time payment. If you are comfortable with basic information such as time, date, day, photo, and battery percentage, then Color Widgets is worth trying. Download Color Widgets
3. Widgeridoo
Widgetridoo is all about the flexibility to customize widgets on the go. The app follows a modular concept and divides the whole widget into several blocks. You can drag and drop and move blocks around for a unique look. Widgetridoo already comes with several built-in widgets divided into categories like Birthdays, Calendar, Feeds, and more. If you look closely, you can view the blocks preview from the category icon itself. From the widget screen, long tap on a block and select Replace. You can change the block with other information such as image, music, text, birthdays, health data, and more. The basic functionality is free, but you want more customization options, then you will have to buy the Pro version at $4. Download Widgetridoo
4. Usage
As the name suggests, Usage is a tool to monitor your device’s activity, data usage, connection speed, and more. With the Usage app, one can track data usage tracking, memory allocation, storage usage, real-time network connection monitoring, battery status, and detailed specification about device hardware right on the home screen. There aren’t many options to configure the widget. But you do get a long list of widget styles and sizes for customization. Among them, my favorite and most-used widget is Data Period Limit. You can see how much data you have used and how much data is remaining from the home screen. Usage is free to use, but I recommend purchasing the pro version for $2 (One-time payment) to enjoy more customization options and features. Download Usage
5. Widget Wizard
Widget Wizard offers Combo widgets that let you choose what data you want to see together in one widget. Widget Wizard doesn’t support near as many data types as the Widgetsmith, but like Widgeridoo it supports multiple content blocks in a single widget. The app mainly offers three types of widgets – The One, The Double, and The Triple. All three widget style offers three sizes and based on your preference, you can add details such as health stats, calendar entries, and reminders to a widget.
