It occurred to me that there must be an app on the Play Store to get the same feature with better control on my Xperia Z and indeed there was one. Light Manager for Android is a simple app that gives you complete control of your device’s LED pulse notification light. With the recent updates, the app works for Lollipop devices as well. Also, it provided way better control than the stock MIUI settings and thus even MIUI users can have a look at it.

Once you install and launch the app, you will have to grant it access to incoming notifications. This will make the app work with third-party apps like WhatsApp and Hangouts. The app does not require root access for devices running on Android KitKat and above. A few of the settings like missed calls, messages, and Gmail notifications come pre-configured and you can tap on any one of them if you wish to change the pulse color or disable it. The app has 9 preset colors, but you can choose a custom color from the settings. Tap on the Test option to test the LED pulse notification color. For some devices you might have to lock your phone to test the notification light. If the app that you wish to configure is not listed by default, you can add it manually. Tap on Add an application and make your selection. You can add as many applications as you want, just remember that there are only a few distinct pulse lights that you can apply for each. Even though the app gives different shades you can select for the colors, the hardware might not always support it. Battery status and network connection can also be monitored using these LED notification lights. There are a few system statuses like Airplane mode and Silent mode that can be configured, but I don’t think you’d need them. The app shows some ads, but you can donate for the pro version to remove them. Apart from that, there are no locked features that can only be unlocked by buying the pro version. In the app’s advanced settings, you can configure sleep time on the app to match any Do Not Disturb modes you have configured on your device. Note: The app has an option called Screen Mode, which is in beta stage. This mode is designed for devices that do not have physical LED notification lights, so alerts will be shown on the screen.
