Apple might be gearing up to implement the feature on the next batch of iPhones, where Force Touch will be an alternative to the long press we have nowadays. Now all that’s required is special Apple hardware. But for Android lovers, MohammadAG, a renowned developer, has implemented the trick without using any special hardware and you can use the feature before any iPhone user. All you need on the phone is root access with Xposed Framework installed. So let’s check out the module and test its features.

Installing System Wide Force Touch on Android

To get started, download and install the System Wide Force Touch from the Xposed Repo. Once the module is installed, activate it and reboot the device. The current version is stable, but the developer is not sure if the app will work on all the devices. There’s no list of supported devices provided by the developer, so you would have to install and check for yourself if the current version works for you. The app works by calculating the surface area used on the screen while you touch it and the movement of the phone using an accelerometer to determine the phone movement in case of a force touch. Both of these sensors are present on almost all smartphone devices, so chances of the app working for you are pretty high.

Setting Up Force Touch

After you’ve installed and activated the module, launch it. In the app, you will be asked to calibrate the force touch, so you’ll have to force touch a button at least 3 times to record an average value. Once that’s done, you can test your force touch in the test box and it will tell you when you force touch or do a normal tap on the phone. After the values are calibrated, reboot the device once more to make the changes system wide. After the reboot, the long tap gesture on your Android will be substituted with Force Touch. Whenever you press the screen of the phone a bit harder than usual, you will see the long press menu. The amount of time you might save is only a few seconds every touch, but what really excited me is the ability to get an iPhone feature even before the iPhone users. Now, as I already mentioned, the app might not work on every device, but that should not be a reason to uninstall the app. The long press action will still work on the phone and you can keep the app just so that you can keep track of future updates that might work on your device.

Conclusion

Force Touch, in my opinion, is nothing groundbreaking. It doesn’t even save a few minutes at the end of the day. The only thing is, something has changed and users are excited about it. So use the app while the excitement lasts and force tap your screen to get the long press feature. Just make sure you don’t damage your screen in the process as it’s just a workaround and not really a hardware-based feature.
